SILVER FOX PREPARING FOR CANADIAN SENIORS MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Carl R Delaney
SUMMERSIDE - The Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club is preparing to host its fifth Canadian Curling Championship since 2002.
The 2013 Canadian Seniors Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships will be held March 16-24 2013. This is the third time this event will be held at the Silver Fox and the fourth time on PEI. This senior’s event was held previously at the Silver Fox in 2006 and 2009. In 2009 it was the Colleen Pinkney’s team from Truro Nova Scotia who won the Canadian Women’s Championship and the Bruce Delaney team from Ottawa winning the Men’s Championship. Both these teams went on to the World Seniors in Chelyabinsk Russia. The Pinkney team won “GOLD” defeating Switzerland’s Renate Nedkoff 8-4 in an extra end final. The Delaney team in the final, also in an extra end ended up with the "SILVER" defeated by Paul Pustovar of Hibbings Minnesota 4-3.
The Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club is extremely pleased to have been chosen to host the 2013 especially after hosting this event in 2006 and 2009.
The Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club has a long history of hosting National and International events dating back to 1981.
These Championships will once again bring much needed economic benefits to our City and Province at a time of year when such activity is needed. Like both previous event, the 2013 will generate over 1.5 million dollars in economic spin-offs with an estimated 800 hotel rooms required for the 11-12 day event.
TWENTY FOUR TEAMS
Twelve men’s and twelve women’s teams, representing the 10 Canadian Provinces plus Northern Ontario and the Yukon/Northwest Territories, will compete to determine the Canadian Seniors Men’s and Women’s champions who will represent Canada at the world’s.
The privilege of hosting such a prestigious national event is one that the Silver Fox members and staff will not take lightly. We were selected to host this event mainly due to the tremendous success we had in our last three nationals.
As in past championships we will have all curlers, visitors and spectators leaving our Province with the feeling of being treated to the best event of its kind anywhere.
The Silver Fox is truly blessed with an exceptionally strong active membership and exceptional volunteer base that will once more be called upon to volunteer 7000-8000 hours to ensure the 2013 is even better than 2006 and 2009.
If the 2013 Championships are anything like the 2006 and 2009 event, Islanders will be able to watch many former world and Canadian champions.
The 2011 seniors will be held in Digby Nova Scotia and the 2012 seniors will be held in Abbotsford British Columbia.
Event details for the 2013 championships will soon be posted on this website.
