2007-2008 Season
CURLING CLUB RULES
1. Rules of Play - The Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club has adopted the Canadian Curling Association Rules of Curling for general play 2007-2008 including the Free Guard Zone. Rules of Play and the Free Guard Zone Rule (4 Rock) Method of Play are posted on the club bulletin board.
2. Time of Draws - All draws shall start on time. Whenever a team is not ready to start play at the scheduled time and ten minutes have elapsed, the faulted team must forfeit 1 point and the Hammer. After twenty minutes have elapsed the faulted team will lose an additional 1 point and the Hammer. When 25 minutes have elapsed the faulted team shall lose by default. The club clock on the scoreboard end shall determine the time.
Examples: 6:00pm Draw 6:15pm Draw
6:10pm 6:25pm Lose 1 point & Hammer Score 1-0 at start of end 2
6:20pm 6:35pm Lose 1 point & Hammer Score 2-0 at start of end 3
6:25pm 6:40pm Game Defaulted
3. Club 2nd Draw Bell Rule - The curling bell will be sounded 40 minutes prior to the start of 2nd draw. Example: if 2nd Draw start time is 8:45pm, the bell will be sounded at 8:05pm. All games in progress (1st Draw) will be allowed to complete the end being played at the sound of the bell, plus one additional end. In the case of a tie, skips will throw one rock each to determine the winner with sweeping permitted. The curling bell rule does not apply to teams on ice which is not scheduled for the 2nd, late, or next draw. The club bell rule will be in effect for club curling bonspiels.
4. Skip Responsibilities - Skips are responsible for having their teams present and ready to curl at scheduled times.
5. Spares - A. Must be a minimum of 2 players from the original team.
B. Skips are responsible for obtaining spares.
Spare Rules - C. In the Mixed, Men's and Ladies' leagues a spare cannot play any position higher than the curler he/she is sparing for.
D. In the Competitive league a spare can play any position.
Use of the spare lists is strongly encouraged. All regular (full membership) members are eligible to spare for other teams in positions indicated unless otherwise specified by the draw chairperson. Spares, however, will not be eligible for club team awards until they become a regular member of the applicable team. Juniors, one-night, commercial, and senior curlers are not allowed to spare.
6. Maintenance - Curlers are not to proceed on the ice surface until ice maintenance has been completed and staff have indicated that play can commence. This restriction will rigidly be enforced to prevent possible accidents between ice maintenance staff and curlers warming up and practice sliding.
7. Smoking - Smoking is prohibited everywhere in the building except for the designated smoking room located near the main lounge.
8. Food/Drink - Food is not permitted on or around the ice surface. Non-alcoholic beverages are restricted to the walkway adjacent the viewing window and must be in plastic containers.9. Alcohol - No alcohol is permitted on or around the ice surface.
10. Footwear - Footwear is to be clean and in good repair. A mechanical shoe cleaner is available and must be used every time before proceeding onto ice surface. If you have to leave the ice while play is continuing, clean your shoes when you return to the ice.
11. Draw Results - Mates are responsible for ensuring the draw results are posted. Failure to do so will result in a "default" being recorded for both teams and 0 points being allotted.
12. Practice Ice - Practice ice time is available to members with applicable memberships only on designated sheets. Check the white board for ice availability.
13. Children - Children must at all times be in the care and control of a parent or guardian. Your cooperation is essential. Infractions of the PEI Liquor Control Regulations could result in severe penalties for our club.
14. It is your responsibility and right as a regular member of the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club to ensure enforcement of all rules and regulations. Members should encourage others to perpetuate all facets of honesty, fair play, good sportsmanship and curling etiquette.
Sign Up For Weekly Draws & Bonspiels
To register for weekly draws and weekend bonspiels you must put your name on the sign up sheets posted on the bulletin board. League curling requires signing up for each round (once per year is not enough). Each league usually has three rounds.
The bulletin board has lots of good information! Check it frequently!
Membership
From the variety of memberships offered, choose the one that best suits your needs. A full membership allows you to curl as often as you'd like. Fees and privileges vary with different divisions. Check to see if you are paying the right amount.
Fees are due upon registration and you must be registered before stepping out on the ice.
Suggestion Box
If you have a valid suggestion for the curling executive, we have a suggestion box located outside of the manager's office.
Lockers/Equipment
Lockers are in high demand and limited supply. All curlers are welcome to use the locker rooms but please be careful with your belongings. The club is not responsible for lost items. Call or drop by the office to ask about locker availability.
Curling equipment can also be purchased from the office and makes a great gift! Check out brooms, shoes, gloves, pants, grippers and more from Olson, Asham, Codiac and Balance Plus!
Open House/Curling Clinics
Not sure if curling is right for you? Talk to experienced curlers and try it out at our open house in the fall before you register. Already a curler? Improve your skills at a clinic during the season. Watch the Journal Pioneer for upcoming dates.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE
1. Full dues can be paid when registering, or
2. 50% of dues at registration and balance by post-dated cheque or credit card dated no later than December 15/07.
3. Curling dues are non-refundable.
All curling club members are members of the Silver Fox year round - this is your club. Come and enjoy it whenever you can and bring your friends. We are proud to have one of the best clubs anywhere. Don't forget to take advantage of the members' lounge. It's beautiful and yours to enjoy!
SPARES - If you are interested in sparing please
ensure that your name and telephone number are listed on the draw sheet.
Don’t forget to make sure your membership allows you to spare! You must be a
full curling club member to spare.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who owns the Silver Fox?
The Silver Fox is a non-profit community complex operated by a general manager under the direction of an elected board of directors. This board is made up of an equal number of representatives from the curling and yachting executives.
Do you rent out the ice to groups?
Sheets are occasionally rented to non-members, but ice availability is very limited. Rentals must be arranged through the general manager. Members may not bring their friends/family to curl without arranging a paid rental with the general manager.
What equipment do I need to curl?
The most important equipment for curling is shoes and a broom. Those without proper curling shoes can wear clean indoor sneakers on the ice. It is recommended that members purchase their own broom and shoes. Equipment can be purchased at the club at very reasonable prices.
When does the ice go in?
The ice goes in early in October every fall and is taken out in mid-April.

General Curling Etiquette
Can't Curl Tonight? When you are unable to play in your scheduled game, notify the skip immediately so a spare can be found.
Hurry-Up-And-Finish-Curling Bell
A bell will ring 40 minutes before you must be off the ice. When you hear the bell, you may play one more end, then clear the ice.
Clean Shoes and Brooms Please ensure shoes & brooms are clean before stepping on the ice. Dirt and debris can damage the ice.
Shake Hands with the opposing team before and after each game.
Do I Curl Early or Late? Curling draws and game schedules are posted on the bulletin board and on the club website. Check often so you don't miss a match!
As one team delivers and sweeps their rock, sweepers of the opposite team stand between the hog lines and to one side.
If you, your broom or clothing touch a moving stone, the rock is "burned" and must be removed from play. It cannot be re-thrown. Dropped earrings, pins, hats, gloves, etc. can also burn a rock so be careful.
Only the skip and mate (third) are allowed in the house between turns. Sweepers may sweep their own team's stone into the house. Once the stone comes to rest sweepers retreat to the area between the hoglines
After a game curlers usually socialize behind the glass with the other teams.
Curling is an exciting sport that can be enjoyed by everyone. Why not become involved in a fun activity to help fight the winter blues? You will meet new people while maintaining physical fitness!

FREE GUARD ZONE
1. The free guard zone is the area between the hog line and the tee line, excluding the house. A stone which comes to rest biting or in front of the hog line after making contact with a stone in the free guard zone is considered to be in the free guard zone. A stone which comes to rest outside the house but biting the tee line is not in the free guard zone.
2. Any stationary stone(s) belonging to the opposition that is located within the free guard zone shall not be removed from play prior to the delivery of the 5th stone of the end.
Interpretation: A delivered 3rd or 4th stone of an end may hit an opposition's stone(s) in the free guard zone onto a stone(s) not in the free guard zone providing the opposition's original free guard zone stone(s) remains in play. If the opposition's original free guard zone stone(s) is removed from play, penalty situation #1 applies.
Penalty situation #1: If an opposition's stone(s) located in the free guard zone is removed from play prior to the delivery of the 5th stone of the end, the non-offending team may:
(i) allow the play to stand; or
(ii) request the game clock to be stopped, remove the stone just delivered from play and replace the displaced stationary stone(s) as close as possible to its original position. If the teams cannot agree the official shall replace the displaced stationary stone(s).
Penalty Situation #2:If the delivered 3rd or 4th stone of an end initially hits a stone(s) eligible to be removed from play and as a result an opposition's stone(s) in the free guard zone is removed from play, the non-offending team may
(i) allow the play to stand; or
(ii) request the game clock to be stopped, remove the delivered stone from play and replace the stone removed from the free guard zone as close as possible to its original position. If the teams cannot agree the official shall replace the stone. The stone initially hit will remain where it came to rest.
Penalty Situation #3: If the delivered 3rd or 4th stone of an end simultaneously hits a stone(s) not in the free guard zone and an opposition's stone(s) in the free guard zone and as a result the opposition's stone(s) in the free guard zone is removed from play, the rule shall be applied as if the stone(s) not in the free guard zone was hit initially (see Penalty Situation #2).
3. After the delivery of each of the first three stones of an end it is the responsibility of the skip of the team who is about to deliver to ensure agreement with the opposing skip as to whether or not any of the stones in play have come to rest in the free guard zone.

Club Activities
Lend a hand - Keeping our club running and paying the bills takes support from all of our members. We need your help! Sample activities include serving at banquets, setting up chairs, serving on a committee, promoting club products, being a buddy to a new curler and more. Just ask!
Gold Rush - Every morning a name is drawn from the list of our curling, yachting and social members. If you have signed in (50¢) at the bar on the day your name is drawn, you win whatever money is in the pot. Often the pot is quite generous. Must be at least 19 years old.
Fox Talk - Every week or two a "Fox Talk" article appears in the Journal Pioneer. It's another great way to keep up with club news.
Silver Fox Grill - Our club restaurant serves meals Mon.-Fri. from 11am-2pm and on Friday from 5pm-8pm. Bring a friend for lunch!
Fun at the Fox - Every Friday and most Saturdays there is musical entertainment in our lounge. Watch for Saturday night dances!
Foxy Fund-raising - Our major fund-raising event is the Motor-Home Dinner Draw in June. Throughout the year there are many more and all require great volunteers like you!
What's so great about curling anyway?
"You meet a lot of people who become friends for life!"
"It's great exercise and a lot of fun!"
"You can start when you're young or when you retire."
"Curling is one of the more sportsmanlike games left."
"It's a lifelong sport - you can play at any age - and there is a lot of skill to the game."
"It helps fight the winter blues."
"Lots of friends, lots of fun and lots of parties!"
CURLING IS FUN FOR EVERYONE!
